Promeathean Boards

A classroom today looks very different than it did 20 years ago. Classrooms are changing every year to keep up with the changes in technology. The way students learn is changing every year too. A new technology in many classrooms is the Promethean board. It is an interactive learning and teaching tool that was created in early 2000 to give students a more hands-on way to learn. It allows the teachers to teach lessons digitally. The lesson board comes with pre-designed programs to fit the subject being taught and then the teachers have the option to personalize each lesson by adding additional text, sound and movies. The board is controlled by a pen that is touched to the board to make each screen change. Everything that shows on the screen in front of the classroom also appears on the teacher’s desktop computer monitor, so the screen can also be controlled from the teacher’s desk. There is also an option to freeze the whiteboard screen so the teacher and students can be working on different things at the same time.

How do you think this new technology would be effective in a classroom and for students, especially special education students and other students with disabilities?

  1. The use of technology in the classroom is inclusive for every child; there is a large number of hardware devices and software available in the market that were developed focusing in accessibility, mobility and comfort of the final user. And example of this technology will be the voice recognition application integrated to the Microsoft office suite, or the magnifiers integrated in the Windows environments that can be use to enlarge screen area. The tools are there but we have to look for it, and learn how to use it, and applied. Must of the old teachers are not that familiar with technology and tend to guide their classrooms in the same direction, but instead what is being created is a disadvantage for our students. We need to train ourselves to learn and apply new tools and technology in order to help our students.

  2. The Promethan board seems like a great tool for individual learning styles if the teacher adds a variety of media. As we know, what is beneficial to special needs students is beneficial to regular ed students as well. Students would be able to work at their own pace and focus on strengths of learning like audio, visual etc. It sounds like additional material could be added for accelerated students as well as additional material for those struggling.

Again, the Promethean board sound like a good tool but not a replacement. Have you used it? If so, do the students seem to have a better understanding of material?

I have 1 in my classroom that I use on a daily basis. My students and muself really love it. I think that the students have a better understanding because it reaches all learning styles and blooms levels so I feel that I am reaching every student better. I also have Special Ed students in my class and they seem to be more involved in each lesson.

I am glad to hear it works so well. Yesterday we just had an inservice to show us the Tablets we will have next year in our new building. It sounds like it will be similar to what you have. I can't wait to use it.
